Turkey tax dropped by ‘Scrooges’ Daily Telegraph 24th December 2003

The Inland Revenue announced last night that it would not seek to reclaim tax on turkeys, boxes of chocolates and bottles of wine given by employers to staff at Christmas. The reprieve was confirmed after the taxman was accused of acting “like Scrooge” by targeting employers who gave turkeys to their workforce. The Conservative Party highlighted a £6,000 tax bill handed to a company in Andover, Hants, which had given turkeys to each of its staff at Christmas for the past six years.

The Inland Revenue was demanding up to £17 in tax for one turkey as part of a campaign to clamp down on “benefits in kind” received by employees. Most, such as company cars or private health insurance, are already taxable. George Osborne, the Conservative treasury spokesman, accused the Inland Revenue of “shabby behaviour”. “How mean can the Inland Revenue get? It is typical behaviour from a ‘bah, humbug’ Government which specialises in relentlessly squeezing every last penny out of hard-pressed taxpayers.”

Inland Revenue officials said new guidance had been sent out last month stating that rules should be applied “flexibly” over Christmas gifts. Where it was a trivial gift of a seasonal nature, tax should not be imposed.
